Que pasa Fernando?
Its been a strange year for Feranado Torres. Beset by injuries and terrible losses of form for Liverpool he has a World Cup winners medal on his mantelpiece from playing for Spain. Inwardly though you wonder whether he believes his best days are behind him. Where is the player that terrorised Vidic at Old Trafford two seasons ago? Or the player that reduced Sendoros to tears after Liverpool's quarter final victory against Arsenal at Anfield? The Torres we see now is a pale imitation of the 'Liverpool number 9' that the Kop sings but what is the underlying problem?
Perhaps Torres is still carrying some sort of a knock. It is clear after four seasons at Anfield that the rough and tumble of the Premiership have taken their toll. It can be particulary cruel to those strikers who rely on pace because once the hamstrings go thats it; Michael Owen anyone? When was the last time you saw Torres zip past a defender before blasting the ball into the back of the net?
Maybe the issue is psychological. Its no secret that Liverpool are a poor team that rely heavily on their big players. Aside from Reina, Gerrard, Carragher and possibly Kuyt the rest of the squad is distinctly average. How many more goals would Torres score if he had two speed merchants on either flank zipping balls in across the box for him to feast on or a quaterback midfield player like Alonso (remember him?) to ping 30 yard unerring balls to his feet? If Dalglish and Comolli can find those players then perhaps Torres will have a new lease of life.
Whatever the issue is it needs to be resolved soon if Liverpool are to resurrect their season. If he is fishing for a move then his performances need to improve because who would buy him now? The Liverpool fans will still chant his name but there is a growing feeling that his heart isn't in it anymore. If Torres wants to know what the fans are like when they turn against you then all he needs to do is chat with Roy Hodgson.Dalglish will have sympathy towards him but if his attitude doesn't improve then that will be short lived because King Kenny doesn't suffer fools gladly. Nobody is bigger than the club and come next summer Liverpool fans may be quite willing to say adios to El Nino. YNWA
